ONGOING THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND:March 31st – April 3rd 2011 in Sackville, NB

The weekend of A Handmade Assemby (will be reported by Carissa Carman in a special edition newspaper delivered as the Almost Always Sunday Paper, in this case she is calling it The Sackville Gazette: Canada edition.

Carman designs printed materials that report “news” in small towns and traveling destinations where people are connected by shared events. Often times the news takes the form of awkward moments, strange facts, seasonal findings, hidden town history, overheard conversation, local farmers tricks, or nuances of the self and ones’ reflection of a day. She will be on site at the events at the assembly and making news-worthy observations for this special edition newspaper.

A Handmade Assembly is an initiative in response to the significant number of Struts members across Canada, the many artists who have been Struts Open Studio artists-in-residence, and artists generally who have in the recent years been using materials and processes which are laborious, often intimate, and usually tactile. In appreciation of the handmade in contemporary culture, A Handmade Assembly is a venue for artists to discuss their practices and make new and necessary networks.

Struts & Faucet programmes are made possible with supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport. A Handmade Assembly is presented in collaboration with the Owens Art Gallery (Sackville, NB), Eyelevel Gallery (Halifax, NS) and Thunder & Lightning Ltd. (Sackville, NB.).
