Color Collective
The Color collective is an intercultural collaboration gathering in the city of Montréal, three MFA artists from Korea, US and France. Johanna Autin, Carissa Carman and Sarah Gotowka are seeking the crossing points between contemporary and tradition, between new media and ancient textile techniques, between the culture of color and the politics of agriculture.... This collaboration is rooted in the exploration of color as a sustainable medium, a physical experience and as a daily practice.
Since 2009 The Color Collective has sustainably grown and harvested plants for natural dying processes, cultivating by hand with the absence of machinery, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. This invested research and appropriation of ancient knowledge resulted in Color Rhythm, an immersive video and sound installation that captured the repetitive rhythm surrounding the labor of these actions.
This collaboration speaks to the emotional distance between people and cloth, people and food, people and earth, while it also bridges the distance through a literal merging of the two mediums; the handmade and technology.
We investigate the relationship between organically grown natural dyes and video, and question the contemporary appropriation of ancient traditions where materials and skill sharing function as a common language.
